StyleCrush Interviews...Omenaa Boakye‏ - Successful Fashion Journalist

1. Tell us a little bit about your background

I grew up in Golders Green, North West London. I now live in New York and have been here for three and a half years.

When I was sixteen I applied for an internship at two teen magazines, Bliss and Mizz. I worked in the fashion departments of both magazines over my summer holidays. I enjoyed working for both publications so much that I decided I wanted to be a fashion journalist and stylist. After completing my A Levels, I successfully gained a place at London College of Fashion on their BA (Hons) Fashion Promotion and Journalism course. Throughout my degree I continued to do work experience with different publications to learn more about the industry.

I have worked with TV shows, celebrities and brands both in London and New York namely; Bloomingdales, Macys, Lancôme, L’Oreal, Nintendo, Nivea, Ted Baker, The Times, InStyle, Harpers Bazaar, People, InTouch Weekly, Ladies Home Journal, The Wendy Williams Show, GMTV, BBC and CBS’ The Early show, amongst others.

2. What made you choose a career in the fashion industry in particular?

My mother has always been in to haberdashery, as a child I would see her making curtains, upholstering chairs and sewing amazing dresses. I also have three older sisters; I think seeing their style and my mum’s love of fashion sparked a big interest in me.

3. Fashion and style is constantly evolving. How do keep up to date with current and upcoming trends?

Every year New York, London, Paris and Milan fashion weeks take place. All the designers show there collections at these shows giving you an idea of the trends for the forthcoming season. In addition, I read magazines, blogs and industry papers like WWD and Drapers. I also keep abreast of what is going on in society as society has a big impact on trends. People-watching is another past time; I love to see what people are wearing on the street and how they have put outfits together.

4. This season’s trends have ranged from tartan to punk fashion. Which trend would you consider your favorite for autumn/winter 2013?

I think it is very necessary to be aware of what the current trends are, however, I am not a big follower of them. I prefer to buy great staple items and unique pieces when styling myself. That said, I love the current boy-meets-girl trend: pinstripes, oversized coats and double-breasted jackets. I like structured tailoring.

5. Given your experience and success, what top 5 tips can you give our readers that would help them to pursue a career in fashion journalism or styling?

1. Intern, get work experience or assist – this is an invaluable experience that will help equip you with the necessary skills for the industry and give you great insight.

2. If you want to be a stylist do test shoots. If you want to be a journalist try and get writing experience; write for your university newspaper, local community paper, set up a blog or volunteer your writing skills to someone’s fashion site.

3. Read – make sure you keep up to date with what is going on in the industry and read magazines and blogs for inspiration.

4. Be innovative- think outside the box, what spin can you put on your article or shoot that is different? Always aim to grab the attention of the reader. Be inventive.

5. Never be afraid to ask. If you do not know something or do not understand something, ask. It is the only way you will ever learn.

6. And finally, what would you say is a key fashion piece that every woman should own?

Ohhhh….just one? That’s impossible….I would probably have to say a great pair of black high heels; they immediately add elegance to any outfit, whether you are wearing a pair of skinny jeans or a tailored skirt.

StyleCrush Loves...Velvet Blazers

High end collections have highlighted Velvet Blazers as the key piece for this year's party season.

Proceed with caution, this trend can make you look incredibly suave or unnecessarily retro.

Be sure to pair the timeless dark coloured blazer with a crisp white shirt and dark trouser combination as seen on Sherlock Homes actor Benedict Cumberbatch.

Designers from Alexander McQueen to Dolce & Gabbana and Etro have taken the velvet blazer in a new direction with contrast patterns, and varying bright colours.

boohoo.com Spring Summer 2014

I was privileged to attend boohoo.com's Spring/Summer 2014 press day on Tuesday, where I was able to have a sneak peek at their upcoming collection.

They're women's collection consisted of pastels, and lady-like samples with clear inspiration from Burberry Prorsum's Sprint Ready to Wear collection that debuted earlier this year.

Jourdan Dunn and Cara Delevingne work the pastels trend on the Burberry Prorsum S/S rtw 2014 runway

I also spotted plenty of monochrome inspired pieces as seen in Chloé's Resort earlier this year

Style Crush's One to Watch…Jourdan Dunn

London born Jourdan Dunn has, since her debut in 2007, become one of the most sought after models in recent years.

Aside from her many accolades, Dunn made history having been the first black model to walk a Prada runway in over a decade.

While it is obvious she is well on her way to becoming a fashion icon, it is her ability to beat the odds against her that keeps her winning.

Jourdan was featured as the face of H&M's Spring 2013 collection

She was also selected to walk in last year's Olympic Closing Ceremony, paying homage to British designers, in this Jonathan Sanders gown.

Dunn admitted that she had faced racial discrimination in her career in Net-A-Porter's The Edit but has nonetheless forged on.

She was awarded as Model of the Year at the 2013 Harpers Bazaar Women of the Year Awards

Jourdan was also hand picked to feature in Vogue Italia by Anna Wintour's protégé Steven Meisel solely dedicated to black fashion models.

Style Crush Loves...Tartan

Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfield was one of the first to bring the tartan trend to the forefront this Autumn and it has proven to be a fashion favourite this season.

Plaids have been sported by many including Rita Ora, Jessica Alba, and Sarah Jessica Parker to name a few.

It was announced last month that Parisian designer Isabel Marant and High Street store H&M are to collaborate and produce an autumn collection. This will be Marant's first time to create a collection for men as well as women, and judging from the sneak pictures posted on Instagram it looks quite exciting to say the least.

London Fashion Weekend

I was privileged to attend the British Fashion Council's London Fashion Weekend. While the event was fun filled, one of my most favorite moments was an inspiring talk from Reem Kanj co-founder of fivefivefabulous.com. She gave me first hand advice on pursuing a successful career in fashion which I am entirely grateful for, be sure to check out her website. I also was able to make note of Spring/Summer 2013's exciting new trends while attending the catwalk show hosted by Zoe Hardman.

Eastern Promise

One of my personal favorite trends this coming season is the Oriental inspired prints consisting of kimono type gowns and vibrant colours.

The trend has been seen on stars such as Katy Perry, the Kardashians, and model Chanel Iman

Will you be rocking the Eastern trend this season?

Style Crush's One to Watch...Kerry Washington

American Actress Kerry Washington has been in acting for quite some time. After her phenomenal performance in Ray Charles biopic Ray, I can personally say I am happy to see her gain more recognition.  She is currently the lead actress in television drama Scandal, and has starred in Quentin Tarantino's controversial slavery film Django Unchained. Her fashion forward style has stunned critics so far and I am sure she will continue to do so throughout the coming year.

StyleCrush Loves...Oxblood Red

While this is a fairly old trend dating from Autumn 2012, I believe it is one worth noting as it has the potential to last for quite a while.
ACNE Autumn 2012

Christian Siriano Autumn 2012

Nanette Lepore Autumn 2012

As usual the celebs have quickly adopted the trend. Alexa Chung, similarly to Christian Siriano, wore the trend colors from head to toe at Versace's store opening in New York.

While singer Alicia Keys opted for an all black ensemble with an oxblood blazer, at BET's 106 & Park last October.

Duchess Kate Middleton rocked an oxblood blazer and skirt by French label Paule Ka.

Will you be wearing the oxblood trend this season?
